About Us

Where It Started

H. William Martin was a young, idealistic, lawyer, complete with Ivy League juris doctor.

He was determined to be the best advocate for those who were most taken advantage of in the legal system: the financially challenged; women; and children.

Setting up his office in a large, regional, town, he was in his element.

One of the first cases was a woman fighting for sole custody of her 5 year old son, fighting his abusive father, her ex-husband.  Her ex had put her in the hospital with a concussion, and left her son with a broken arm in the same altercation.

These were not the first hospital stays at the hands of the ex, the father of the boy.

In a well documented court appearance, Mr. Martin was astounded that the judge would fall asleep, at the bench, during active testimony.  Multiple times.

Despite overwhelming evidence establishing years of abuse, of criminal incarceration, the judge ruled – not only would custody be delivered to the mother – she was stripped of all custody as full physical custody was granted to the abusive father.

The judge had heard none of the evidence.  The judge wasn’t even sure what the issues were.

When our young, appalled, Mr. Martin filed a complaint for judicial review – his practice was blackballed, he was held in contempt of court.

One older, seasoned, reasonably successful lawyer gave him sage advice: don’t be a home town lawyer where you have to play the ‘look the other way’ game in order to survive.  Always be the out-of-towner where you fiercely represent your client without having to worry about your practice being destroyed.

Thus was born Women’s Legal Resource.

We are a skeletal team of top-notch advisors which decide if we can take a case – if we can win it, decisively.   Then, we bring in the specific, narrow focused, lawyers/investigators/support staff we need to bring a full on assault to get the job done for our client.

No suite of expensive offices.  No single lawyer who wears multiple hats.  No fear of personal loss in aggressively representing our clients to the fullest extent of the Constitution, of ethics, and of what is right.
